RANDOLPH BOARD OF HEALTH ANNOUNCES FLU SHOT DATES
The Town of Randolph has received a limited supply of the influenza vaccine for the upcoming 2004-2005 season. We will be dispensing the vaccine on Monday, November 15, 2004, between the hours of 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on a first come, first serve basis based on the criteria listed below. The location of the clinic will be at the Randolph Senior Center located at 16 Fencourt Avenue, off Union Street. The criteria for obtaining a flu shot from the town’s public health nurse are as follows:
  • You must be a Randolph resident (identification is required)
  • You must be 75 years of age or older
  • If you are under the age of 75 and you have chronic medical conditions, which require frequent or ongoing medical management, you must obtain documentation from your health care provider, stating your conditions. This INCLUDES individuals with a chronic disorder of the pulmonary or cardiovascular system and those with chronic metabolic diseases like Diabetes, Kidney problems, Immunosuppression, Cancer, HIV Infection or blood disorders.
  • This DOES NOT include adults aged 18 – 49 years with Diabetes who only require diet or exercise for control. This DOES NOT include adults whose only condition is High Cholesterol, CONTROLLED High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, Dermatitis or any other diagnosis which does not increase the risk of complications from the Flu.
  • This DOES include all women who are pregnant.
  • We will not be vaccinating any children at this time (ages 6 months to 18 years)

Individuals receiving the Flu vaccine who are over 65 years of age should bring their insurance cards to the Flu clinic with them. We have a limited supply for those individuals who are home bound and are unable to come to the clinic. If you meet the above criteria, please call the Randolph Board of Health for special arrangements @ 781 961 0924

The Randolph Board of Health would like to stress the importance of adhering to these criteria as set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. We wish that we could vaccinate every person that needed it, but with the shortage for this upcoming season, we must only vaccinate those individuals of highest risk. Thank you for your cooperation.

Blood Pressure Clinics
The Randolph Board of Health holds blood pressure clinics at different Senior Housing complexes twice monthly. Clinics are also held twice monthly at the Randolph Senior Center. Check your particular location for the times. Municipal employees may have their blood pressure checked monthly on the first Thursday of the month at Town Hall.

Clinic Services
Randolph residents may receive routine blood pressure screening by appointment at the Randolph Board of Health free of charge. Those individuals who require medication by injection, who are unable to self-administer, may also receive their medication by appointment. A physician's order for medication administration is required. There is a $5.00 clinic charge for medication administration except immunizations.

Home Based Services
If individuals are homebound and do not qualify for visiting nurse services and require routine keep well visits for health maintenance, arrangements can be made for home visits by the public health nurse. There is a fee for this service. If medication administration is needed, a physician's order for medication administration is required. Check with the nurse to see what the cost might be.

BIOHAZARD BUY BACK PROGRAM
If there are individuals in the community that dispose of old needles or blood testing supplies, the Randolph Board of Health is offering a program whereby we will give you a new red biohazard container and dispose of your needles for the cost of $5.00.

Vaccine Disribution
The Randolph Board of Health is a vaccine distributor for Health Care Providers who are registered with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Vaccine Program. Providers are private physician offices and long term care facilities. Orders for vaccines must be faxed to the Randolph Board of Health one week prior to distribution. Providers must adhere to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Vaccine Storage policies and procedures.

Infectious Disease Surveillance
The public health nurse is responsible for following and investigating infectious diseases for the Town of Randolph. Whenever a positive communicable disease report is received at the board of health, the nurse must verify with the individual's primary care physician that they are aware of the diagnosis. A letter and information about the disease is sent to the individual and a follow-up telephone interview is done. The purpose of this process is to ensure that the individual is educated about his/her illness, potential contacts have been informed, and the person is under physician's care. Communicable diseases can be self-limiting or have the potential for exposure and spread to the community at large, thus the importance of follow-up is very important.

Tuberculosis Case Management
The public health nurse is responsible for the monitoring of individuals in the community with active tuberculosis disease to ensure compliance with treatment and to deter the spread of the disease in the community. The individual with TB is monitored throughout the course of their treatment. This might include telephone calls to actual home visits.

Community Collaboration
The public health nurse is often a liaison between the public health system and other community agencies which may include the local school system, public safety, town government, human service agencies and individuals in the community.

In response to the current outbreak, the Massachusetts Immunization Program (MIP) will supply hepatitis A vaccine to the following high-risk adults at public provider sites, such as community health centers and local health departments:
    1. Users of illicit drugs (both injecting and non-injecting).
    2. Homeless people and people that frequent homeless shelters.
    3. Men who have sex with men.
    4. Persons with clotting factor disorders.
    5. Persons with chronic liver disease, including hepatitis B and C.
    6. Persons infected with HIV.
Hepatitis A vaccine will be administered free of charge for those individuals listed above by appointment only. For more information, call the Randolph Board of Health.
